Postsecondary Education for All Ages
Betty McNeil received a college degree at 82-years-old. She jested with her family that 83 was far too old to get a college degree, so she had to accomplish it by the time she was 82. She spent far more than four years pursuing her degree, but with determination, and strategically set classes that acclimated to her schedule, she completed her educational dreams.
It is never too late to go back to school. Successful educational stories do not just come from recent high school graduates anymore, but from all walks of life. Thanks to the baby boomers, the record number of college students ages 50+ continues to increase.
Kelly-Anderson describes her experience going back to school. "'Why are you going to school, Mom-Mom? Aren't you too old for school?' I have to admit that my granddaughter Mallory's question caught me off-guard. At six, she was the first one who'd had the nerve to ask. Isn't it amazing how little kids just blurt out the questions nobody else dares? I didn't tell her all the reasons, but I did answer that I still wanted to learn things."
Scholarships are available for parents returning to school. Also, if you are employed at a large corporation, your employer may be willing to pay for part or all of your college degree.
