Reputability of an Online College

The reputability of a college is large-in-part determined by whether or not the college holds any kind of accreditation.

Online education has become more accepted since distance learning was first implemented through the use of VHS tapes. Other educators and employers are now placing online colleges on par with campus colleges, provide these online colleges have the necessary accreditation to validate the quality of their education.

It goes further than just merely being accredited by any agency, too if you want to attend an online college with enough reputability to guarantee unit transferability to other prestigious universities, chances are you need to go to a school recognized by one of the Six Regional Accrediting Agencies .

Other factors that grant reputability to an online college beyond accreditation are:

  • How long has the online college been established
  • Does the online college have a mailing address/publicized, tangible location
  • The reviews of other students that have participated in the online college's programs

The same tactics to recognize and avoid a degree mill can be used to determine an online college's reputability, and the more pluses they have to add up, the better.

Whether your online college is reputable or not should not be the sole determining factor for if you attend the college though. Some prestigious universities have already been around for a couple of years and are in the middle of the accreditation process. This does not undermine their ability to deliver a rewarding educational experience.
